Steph & Chris’ Sunrise Lake Isabelle Elopement
There are some wedding days that remind you just how little we can control—and how beautiful it can be when everything works out anyway. Steph and Chris’ Lake Isabelle elopement was one of those mornings. We had planned to hike up to Lake Isabelle before sunrise, exchange vows surrounded by the mountains, and spend the morning taking in one of Colorado’s most beautiful alpine landscapes. But just before their elopement, an unexpected medical situation meant we weren’t sure that plan would be possible at all. For about a week, we talked about moving their elopement to another location that would be more accessible and accommodating. And honestly, I would have been happy to find them somewhere beautiful where they could still have the morning they had envisioned.
But at the very last minute, they were able to make the decision to go for it, and we made our way up to Lake Isabelle for their wedding.
It was absolutely worth it.
A Sunrise Elopement at Lake Isabelle
We arrived at the lake in the soft early-morning light, and Colorado seemed to have decided to give us a little gift for making it there. The weather was perfect. The mountains were calm and still. Summer wildflowers were blooming along the trail and around the lake, adding little bursts of color to an already incredible landscape.
And then there was the reflection.
The surface of Lake Isabelle was almost perfectly still, creating a mirror image of the surrounding mountains. When Steph and Chris stood at the edge of the lake to exchange their vows, the peaks were reflected behind them so clearly that it felt almost surreal. It was one of those rare Colorado mornings where everything simply came together.
Steph and Chris exchanged vows with the mountains, wildflowers, and glassy lake surrounding them. No elaborate setup. No need for anything beyond the landscape itself. Just the two of them and a place that felt completely worth the effort it took to reach it.
When the Plan Almost Changed
Elopements in the mountains always require some flexibility. Weather can change quickly. Trails can be inaccessible. Snow can linger well into summer. And sometimes, completely unexpected circumstances have nothing to do with the mountains at all. This time, it was a medical situation that nearly changed the entire plan. Being willing to pivot is one of the reasons I love photographing Colorado elopements. The goal isn’t simply to execute a perfectly scripted day. It’s to create something meaningful together, even when the original plan has to change.
Thankfully, Steph and Chris were able to make the hike, and that made their vows feel even more significant and special.
Colorado Wildflowers, Alpine Lakes & Mountain Vows
July is such a beautiful time for a Lake Isabelle elopement. The alpine landscape begins to come alive with summer wildflowers, while the surrounding peaks still have that dramatic Colorado mountain feel. Lake Isabelle is part of the Brainard Lake Recreation Area and is one of those places that feels almost impossibly beautiful once you reach the lake. The hike, the elevation, and the mountain environment make it a meaningful adventure rather than simply a ceremony location.
The biggest hurdle for an elopement in the area is making sure to snag parking permits – they go up on a rolling 15 day window and Long Lake is the closest lot to the lake. I have ridden my E-Bike up to the upper lots when parking isn’t available, so there’s always a way if the parking permits are sold out.
Congratulations again, Steph and Chris, and I’m SO HAPPY that everything worked out just how it was supposed to <3. I had a wonderful morning adventuring around with the two of you.
Cheers-
