Hannah and Tyler | Thunderhead Lodge Wedding

Savannah Chandler Photography | Steamboat Springs Wedding Photographer
I met Tyler and Hannah (and their puppers) on a cold and blustery winter morning, where I was going to meet them up at Winter Park resort to photograph Tyler proposing to Hannah. Well, Colorado decided to… Colorado and closed down all the roads leading out of Denver and to the West. We pivoted, and I photographed their intimate proposal at Cherry Creek State Park, and then a few weeks later the 3 of us headed up to shred some pow at Winter Park and get some photos up there as well.
When I heard that they were planning their Colorado wedding – in Steamboat Springs – at Thunderhead Lodge – IN PRIME FALL TIME, I was elated. I’m pretty sure that there were some kitchen dances to be had about spending a day photographing such an awesome and fun couple at one of Colorado’s iconic wedding venues.
If you’re dreaming of a Thunderhead Lodge wedding in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Tyler and Hannah’s stunner of a day is a perfect example of why couples are drawn to getting married in the mountains. Between the scenic setting, cozy lodge atmosphere, and the natural beauty that comes with a fall wedding in Steamboat, you really can’t ask for a more Colorado celebration.
Planning a Fall Wedding at Thunderhead Lodge
Fall in Colorado is naturally beautiful, there really is no need to overdesign everything. Let the mountain setting, the textures, and the changing aspens speak for themselves. Tyler and Hannah celebrated in that exact manor – setting up the ceremony chairs overlooking Thunderhead Lawn and the rolling hillsides of changing colors be the primary aesthetic. While we were waiting for the ceremony to begin, I was chatting with a few guests – and we all saw a Black Bear running in the distance down the ski run!
When planning out a timeline, be sure to build in time to really enjoy the landscape. One of the best parts of a Steamboat Springs wedding is the setting itself, so giving yourselves space to step away, take it in, and be present together is always worth it. Tyler and Hannah decided to have a first look, giving us lots of time to get those epic couple’s portraits. They also read their private vows during this time – which allowed not only for stunning photos but a chance for them to say meaningful vows to one another without worrying about doing so in front of all their guests.
As always with ANY wedding in Colorado, prepare for mountain weather. Layers, flexibility, and an easygoing mindset help everything feel smooth and enjoyable. We had a few chilly gusts come through during the evening, but overall we had a wonderful weather day. As we went outside to take a few photos during sunset, we could see a thunderstorm forming in the far distance (which always makes for super cool and dramatic photos!). Though we didn’t need the extra gear – it’s always incredibly wise to be sure and pack extra clothes – and pro tip, bring a few clear umbrellas for photos!
And though it may feel like it goes without saying, be sure to choose vendors who understand mountain weddings and the sometimes crazy logistics that are involved. A venue like Thunderhead Lodge has a good amount of logistics involved – including your vendors driving up the service road to make sure they can bring up all their equipment to the top of the mountain. Here’s who made Tyler and Hannah’s day absolutely awesome:

Florist: Steamboat Floral
Venue: Thunderhead Lodge, Steamboat Resort Weddings
Congratulations again, Hannah and Tyler!
I had so much fun planning, photographing, and celebrating with you both!
Cheers-
